When I was a student nurse, my school was affiliated with the state mental institution. Each student spent time working there.

Like all the others, I had a set of keys on a strong band, which I wore around my waist. The keys hung off the band and nestled in a pocket. I had a key for every locked ward and tunnel. For every locked door, I had to unlock it, go through and relock it behind me.

“Scary” doesn’t quite cover it.

Nancyann (Nov. ‘14) adds, “Safety is a big thing for me. Today I can leave my door unlocked. I have confidence in my neighborhood. But, when I am away, I keep my door locked–better safe, than sorry.”
