Christa (Apr.’15) shares her thoughts by completing our starter, “It helps me to look on the bright side ….” To those words she adds, “when I look at my children.

I know that my son and daughter take almost all of their cues on how to view the world from me, so my

moods influence their outlook on life.

When I look on the bright side, they are happier and more likely to look on the bright side themselves. When I focus on the negative, they catch on to my mood even when I try to hide it.

I’m not an optimist by nature. Pessimism is a family trait that runs deep–my paternal relatives are always ‘waiting for the other shoe to drop.’ But, for my kids, I force myself to be as optimistic as I can.

It’s not always easy. Sometimes I have to simply stop and literally count the blessings in front of me:

health, a home, friends, furniture, and a pantry full of food. That gives me a chance to remember the good things even though I’m prone to thinking of the world as bleak.”
